THE SECRET TO WINNING

Nayan Sharma

Do you want to know the secret to winning?

Everyone knows that it takes a lot of hard work, dedication, determination and inspiration to win and be successful in any field in life. But those aren't secrets. We all know that. Most of us already do that.

How many of you work really hard and are really good at what you do, but sometimes you get scared, nervous, anxious and even fearful that you won't succeed? How many of you have noticed that when there is pressure to perform, you don't quite perform to your best? Have you ever made critical mistakes that lost you a client, or a match or stopped you from closing a deal? How many of you go home thinking about the "silly mistakes" you made and wish you had another chance?

I bet you worked incredibly hard and were highly determined, driven and dedicated. Of course you need to work hard and be dedicated and determined to succeed, but that alone is not enough. You need to know this secret and most importantly you need to APPLY this secret in order to win.
Here it is:

IN ORDER TO WIN, YOU HAVE TO BE WILLING TO LOSE.

The people that achieve success at the very highest level and win the biggest matches, or acquire the very largest clients or close the biggest deals, are those people that are truly willing to lose. They do not succumb to their anxiety or fear about what will happen if they get rejected or if they fail. The very best in the world choose a state of mind where they embrace failure. They might even ask themselves, what is the worst that can happen if I fail? If a client rejects you, or you fail to close a deal or you don't hit the 14 runs off the final over to win the World Cup, what is the worse that can happen? You are still going to be alive, right? And if you are alive, then almost certainly you will get another opportunity and you will find another way to succeed, right?

The only way to conquer the fear and anxiety that can paralyse so many people in moments of pressure, when the expectations are high, when the desire is at its peak, is to wholeheartedly embrace failure.

IN ORDER TO WIN, YOU HAVE TO BE WILLING TO LOSE.

I am going through this right now. I have my eyes set on one of the biggest athletes in this country. But, despite how badly I want this to succeed, I have to keep reminding myself that it is totally ok to lose. It is fine if I get rejected. What is the worse that will happen? Nothing. I will learn and there will be another way. If the manager doesn't want to speak to me, fine. I will find someone else that wants to speak to me. Until I get rejected from the athlete directly, I am not going to give up.

This is my edge. This is what makes anyone a 'dangerous' opponent. I will swing for the fence, and try to hit this ball as far as I can. If I make it, then I do. If i don't, then there will be another way, there will be another opportunity, there will be a lesson.

Just by reminding myself that I have to be willing to lose in order to win, immediately I can notice the difference in how I speak, how I walk, how I present my case to anyone. I feel so strong, I feel confident, I feel fearless, I feel like no-one or nothing can stop me from achieving what I want. I don't care if people are watching and I especially do not care what people will say if I fail.

I don't measure my success by whether I get this client or not. At the end of the day, I will sleep well at night knowing I gave it my absolute all, I pitched like I had nothing to lose, I said what I wanted to say, I did whatever is humanly possible from my end to show someone how I can help them. If all of us can walk away from every single moment in our life, knowing that we have done everything we could, then who cares what result comes of it?

EMBRACE FAILURE, HUG IT, MAKE IT YOUR BEST FRIEND, DO NOT BE SCARED OF IT.

IN ORDER TO WIN, YOU MUST BE WILLING TO LOSE.
